Architects and their tools of the trade | IDC Architects

Innovative and revolutionary, architects handle complex issues to help build our world from the ground up. This career offers opportunities to revamp and, ultimately, shape and transform the environment we live in. Architects today merge environmental awareness, art, technology and sciences. They infuse technical skill and creative design to create intricate solutions for building authentic yet natural environments.

They have a hand in the construction of homes, apartments, office buildings, hospitals, museums, and community structures; such as bridges and dams. Architects have no limits; some architects focus solely on landscape and are responsible for creating the gardens and yards you’re accustomed to indulging in. Architects adamantly understand what it means to meet clients halfway to fully assess their needs and make dreams come true. Architecture is a highly sought-after profession, and many perceive it as a necessary factor in upholding society, and way of developing communities for generations to come. The splendour of this profession often overshadows what tools and skills needed to be successful in this trade. We put together a list covering personal attributes, skills, and, or tools required to be successful in the business of architecture.

  1. Creative and Imaginative Cognitive Skills

Having a tenacious, creative and artistic flair is imperative for being able to undertake and manage the demands of architecture. This allows architects to approach problems as they come without compromising the clients, or their, original vision. Imagination leaves room for diversity, if architects were void of this, then we would all be living in a uniformed false utopia; we would be unable to express ourselves in our environment.

  1. Negotiation Skills

Believe it or not, architects are a lot like modern day barters, in that they negotiate everything from portions of land to settle prices with merchants, and also when buying accessories wholesale. This is important because it aids in their jobs going as smooth as possible.

  1. Envisioning the Bigger Picture and Being Positive

Through storms and tribulations, architects have to be able to remain positive. Keeping the bigger picture that they began with at the forefront of their mind. This is necessary for being able to move forward when plans fail, and setbacks occur.

  1. Keeping up with the Times

Keeping up with the times, or in other words following trends and distinct shifts in cultures is important for architects to be able to relate to other architects and clients their working for. Architects expanding their horizon beyond their community and national borders proves beneficial in that this broadens the reach of their craft. For example, if architects are familiar with how Nicaraguan homes and structures are built to suit the climate, customs, and history, then they could transfer their trade there.
